NEW / OLD

CONSERVATION, REHABILITATION, RENOVATION, RESTORATION, RECONSTRUCTION, REQUALIFICATION, AND SAFEGUARDING are some of the terms that are supposedly used to characterize different ways of intervening in the existing built environment. My option for the title – New / Old – implicitly recognizes the difficulty in properly using these and other terms that are part of the lexicon of architectural heritage, and rather seeks to reflect, through their antinomy, the core essentials of any intervention in the built environment: making the old new – by transforming, correcting, maintaining, replacing, adding, or subtracting, that is, by implementing different operations that give body to the difficult exercise of managing transformation.

TÁVORA’S LESSONS Fernando Távora is a key reference for the students who hadthe privilege of having him as their master, as attested by the wealth of testimonials that mention Távora’s irreplaceable and admittedly remarkable role in their training at an early stage by sharing his solid architectural culture and passion for Architecturewith them. A professor but also an architect – having authored multiple and diversified work that is equally worthy of wide and welldeserved recognition –, Távora stood out in particular with his interventions in the field of heritage conservation.

It was from this set of interventions that FOURTEEN WORKS – DATING FROM

1954 to 2003 – wereselected as the main object of study of this work, comprising ELEVEN HOUSES (MANOR HOUSES, BOURGEOIS HOUSES or FARMHOUSES), seven of which are of rural matrix and the remaining four of urban matrix; two convents;and one equipment.
