Heart of Darkness

Heart of Darkness, a novel by Joseph Conrad,was originally a three-part series in Blackwood’sEdinburgh Magazine in 1899, and examines thehorrors of Western colonialism.
It is a story within a story, following a characternamed Charlie Marlow, who recounts his early lifeas a ferry boat captain to a group of men onboardan anchored ship. Although his job was to transportivory downriver, Charlie develops an interest ininvesting an ivory procurement agent, Kurtz, whois employed by the government. Preceded by hisreputation as a brilliant emissary of progress, Kurtzhas now established himself as a god among thenatives in “one of the darkest places on earth.”
Although garnering an initially lacklustrereception, Conrad’s semiautobiographical tale hasgone on to become one of the most widely analyzedworks of English literature. Critics have not alwaystreated Heart of Darkness favourably, rebukingits dehumanizing representation of colonizedpeoples and its dismissive treatment of women.
Nonetheless, Heart of Darkness has endured, andtoday it stands as a Modernist masterpiece directlyengaged with postcolonial realities.
